There is nothing more English than the sound of church bells ringing across the countryside. In fact, it was in England in the 1500's that the style of ringing called change ringing was developed and hasn't changed since. English Change Ringing is unique and is based on the bell being attached to a wheel which swings the bell 360 degrees. This has the advantage of keeping the bell in regular time. So why get involved with bell ringing? Well, it is an English tradition that should not be allowed to die out and its an excellent way to get mental and physical exercise with a friendly group of people. You do not have to be hugely strong, mathematical, musical, or have any religious convictions. Change Ringing is a very absorbing hobby offering many years of development. Church bells are rung on practice nights, weddings & Sunday Church Services. It does not cost anything to learn to ring except your time. Practice night at Brinkley is on every Thursday between 8pm and 9pm. New starters and visiting ringers are always welcome. You do not need to be a resident of Brinkley in order to join the Brinkley band or ringers. A tour of the tower is by arrangement with the Tower Captain. Brinkley also has a tune-ringing band which makes use of Brinkley's lovely refurbished 18th century set of handbells. If you would like to have a go at handbell ringing please email Nick Milner at handbells@brinkley-bells.org.uk . This Page was last updated on 03/04/06 |
